A major fire incident on Friday swept through the Water Board Internally Displaced Persons Camp in Monguno, Borno State, leaving more than 100 thatched shelters destroyed.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the development on Saturday in Maiduguri through its spokesperson, ASP Nahun Daso.
According to Daso, the blaze started at about 4:30 p.m. and was reported to the Monguno Police Station by the camp chairman, Bukar Mbati.
He explained that the fire spread rapidly through the camp, consuming over 100 makeshift homes and destroying food supplies, personal belongings and other household items.
Emergency responders, including officials of the state fire service, police officers and other security personnel stationed at the camp, reportedly worked together to contain the inferno and prevent further damage.
The Monguno Divisional Police Officer, identified as Supol Monguno, led a team to the site to carry out a preliminary assessment and document the extent of the destruction.
Police said no fatalities or injuries were recorded, although the total value of the properties lost has not yet been determined.
An investigation has since been launched to determine what caused the fire.
