Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has raised concerns over the growing spread of misinformation and defamatory content in the media, cautioning journalists to exercise greater responsibility in their reporting.
The governor emphasised that while a free press remains a cornerstone of democracy, it must be accompanied by professionalism, ethics, and a commitment to truth to prevent harm to society and public trust.
He delivered this message on Sunday during the New Year Thanksgiving Service of the Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists at Qua Iboe Church in Abak Itenghe, Abak Local Government Area.
Represented by the Commissioner for Information, Dr Aniekan Umanah, Governor Eno praised journalists for their role in strengthening democratic governance and encouraged them to uphold accuracy, fairness, and accountability in their work.
He warned that press freedom should not be abused through the publication of false information, malicious reports, or character attacks, particularly on social media platforms where misinformation spreads rapidly.
The governor urged the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, to continue guiding journalists on ethical standards and professional boundaries, especially in the digital age. He also advised media practitioners to familiarise themselves with cybercrime laws to avoid legal infractions that could damage the credibility of the profession.
Speaking on development initiatives, Governor Eno disclosed that his administration is currently implementing more than 20 projects in Abak Local Government Area, including 23 kilometres of road construction, a Model Primary School, a Model Health Centre, water schemes, and Arise Compassionate Homes. He said these projects demonstrate his commitment to improving the welfare of residents and delivering meaningful development.
Earlier in his remarks, Comrade Nsibiet John explained that the thanksgiving service was organised to appreciate God for safeguarding journalists in the state and to seek divine direction for the year ahead.
In his sermon titled Anchored In God, Advancing With Vision, based on Proverbs 3:5, Rev. Ekpedeme Effanga encouraged journalists to rely on God while maintaining integrity, unity, and professionalism in their work. He cautioned against actions that could weaken the unity and reputation of the NUJ.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, Hon. Clement Jimbo, former Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Uwem Udoma, former PDP National Legal Adviser Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem, Abak Local Government Chairman Mrs. Ime Charles Effiong, as well as lawmakers, labour leaders, and members of the NUJ.
