SHEHU ABUBAKAR’S CLAIMS COLLAPSE UNDER LOGIC AND POLITICAL REALITY: SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON GOVERNOR FINTIRI

The publication circulating across a few online platforms under the sensational headline “Atiku’s Son, Shehu Exposes the Secret Reason Governor Fintiri Defected to APC” is, by every standard of objective reasoning, laughable and utterly baseless. It is the kind of commentary that serious-minded individuals would ordinarily ignore. However, in an era where misinformation travels faster than truth, clarity has become a necessity—even when the matter in question lacks substance. For that reason alone, the record must be set straight.

First and foremost, it is important to make one thing abundantly clear: Shehu Abubakar is not his father’s media aide. If former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has any concern, he possesses established and dignified channels through which to communicate such concerns. Attempting to elevate a personal social media remark to the status of an institutional position is not only misleading but intellectually dishonest.

More fundamentally, Shehu’s submissions have absolutely nothing to do with Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri—neither his defection nor any statement made by him or his associates. The core issue that triggered the online exchange was a remark by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanugu. Political spokespersons, across party lines, routinely engage in sharp exchanges. This is neither new nor extraordinary. The very political quarters Shehu appears to defend have engaged in even fiercer rhetoric in the past. To now attempt to drag Governor Fintiri into a reactionary media back-and-forth that he neither initiated nor responded to is logically unsound.

The insinuation that Governor Fintiri defected to the All Progressives Congress to evade probe by anti-graft agencies is not only speculative but betrays a deeper fear—an unspoken anxiety about shifting political tides ahead of 2027. When the entire political structure of Adamawa State—across stakeholders, grassroots mobilizers, and institutional actors—aligns with the strategic vision of one leader, it is bound to unsettle entrenched perceptions. Governor Fintiri’s movement was not an isolated defection; it was a political realignment of enormous magnitude.

Across Nigeria, defections occur frequently. Yet few have generated the national resonance that followed Fintiri’s decision. Within hours, the ripple effect was visible and measurable. Even a casual observer could anticipate the implications for 2027. That is the weight Governor Fintiri carries. That is the value he brings to any political platform he associates with.

It is difficult to believe that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar himself would endorse the reactionary tone attributed to Shehu. Governor Fintiri has never spoken ill of, nor shown disrespect toward, elders in Nigerian politics. The former Vice President belongs firmly within that respected category. Throughout his political journey, Fintiri has demonstrated restraint, decorum, and a people-first approach.

Governor Fintiri’s political trajectory has always been rooted in consultation and consensus. His decision to leave the People’s Democratic Party was not impulsive. It followed wide-reaching engagements and a harmonized agreement with his political base and stakeholders. That is precisely why, immediately after formalizing his move, he traveled to Abuja—not for celebration—but for governance. His meetings with national security officials, including the Defence Ministry, were focused on the safety and wellbeing of Adamawa citizens. That is consistent with his record: governance first, politics second.

If anything surprised Governor Fintiri, it was the overwhelming demonstration of solidarity that followed his defection. The breadth and depth of alignment across party structures and interest groups in Adamawa State were palpable. The movement was organic, not coerced; strategic, not defensive.

Politics is not for the emotionally reactive. A man who approaches politics purely with sentiment has not yet understood its mechanics. Governor Fintiri’s defection was calculated, strategic, and future-oriented. It shook political calculations nationwide. It is often those unsettled by such tectonic shifts who resort to speculative allegations.

A simple logical question must be asked: if there were indeed “skeletons in the cupboard,” and if such knowledge supposedly existed, why was silence maintained until less than 24 hours after the Governor’s defection? Why did these allegations surface only when political alignment shifted? The timing alone exposes the weakness of the claim.

Governor Fintiri remains an asset of immense political and administrative value. His leadership in Adamawa State has been people-centered, structured, and strategic. Attempts to reduce a well-calculated political decision to an escapist maneuver do not withstand scrutiny. They collapse under the weight of basic reasoning.

In politics, as in life, speculation is cheap. Credibility is earned. Governor Fintiri’s record speaks louder than reactionary social media commentary ever could..
