The Confederation of African Football has announced the introduction of the African Nations League, a new annual tournament aimed at providing regular, high-quality competition for the continent’s senior national teams.
CAF said the new league is designed to create a consistent platform where Africa’s top players can compete at a high level, while also increasing their visibility and development on the continental stage.
In a statement shared on its official X account on Monday, the football body described the competition as a landmark initiative, noting that it will guarantee a world-class senior national team tournament every year, featuring the best talent from across Africa.
According to CAF, the African Nations League will help raise standards by encouraging competitive fixtures, supporting player growth and boosting fan interest across the continent. The governing body stressed that the annual format will ensure regular elite-level football for both players and supporters.
The launch underscores CAF’s broader ambition to strengthen African football and enhance its global profile through sustainable competitions that benefit players, teams and national associations.
The announcement comes amid wider reforms in African football, following confirmation that the Africa Cup of Nations will move to a four-year cycle after the tournament scheduled for 2028, a shift from its current two-year format, as disclosed by CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
