Nigerian football fans have taken Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen to task following his heated exchange with teammate Ademola Lookman during Monday’s 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16.
The incident occurred in the 63rd minute when Lookman failed to pass to an unmarked Osimhen during an attacking move. Television footage showed the Galatasaray forward reacting angrily, breaking away from captain Wilfred Ndidi before pointing at Lookman and shouting in frustration. Osimhen was later heard saying in pidgin, “No try am again,” suggesting his displeasure with the decision.
At that stage of the match, Lookman had already been heavily involved in Nigeria’s attacking play, creating two clear chances for Osimhen, including one direct assist and another opportunity that came via Akor Adams.
Moments after the confrontation, Osimhen signalled to the bench and was substituted, leaving the pitch to a chorus of boos as Moses Simon replaced him.
The episode quickly drew widespread criticism on social media, particularly on X, where many fans questioned Osimhen’s conduct in a game Nigeria were comfortably winning. Several users described his reaction as unnecessary and unprofessional, especially given Lookman’s contribution to the match.
Some supporters expressed disappointment that the striker’s behaviour overshadowed what was otherwise a dominant team performance, with others calling on him to show more composure and leadership on the pitch.
Despite the controversy, Osimhen finished the match with two goals, while Lookman also impressed with a goal and two assists as Nigeria secured their fourth straight win of the tournament to book a place in the quarter-finals.
The Super Eagles will next face either Algeria or DR Congo in the last eight as they continue their quest for a first AFCON title since 2013.
