Liverpool legend Ian Rush is recovering in hospital after being treated for flu that left him in intensive care for two days.
The club’s all-time leading goalscorer was admitted to the Countess of Chester Hospital last week after suffering breathing difficulties. Liverpool confirmed on Sunday that the 64-year-old is now on the mend and expressed gratitude to medical staff for their care.
In a brief statement, the club thanked hospital workers for “providing the best care possible” and said everyone at Liverpool was wishing Rush a speedy recovery.
Rush enjoyed two highly successful spells at Anfield during the 1980s, either side of a move to Juventus. He remains Liverpool’s record scorer with 346 goals in 660 appearances, helping the club win five First Division titles and two European Cups.
Beyond Liverpool, Rush featured for Leeds United, Newcastle United and Wrexham in a career that spanned more than two decades. He also earned 73 caps for Wales, scoring 28 goals, a national record that stood until Gareth Bale surpassed it in 2018.
After retiring from playing in 2000, Rush briefly turned to management, spending eight months in charge of Chester. He later returned to Liverpool in an ambassadorial role and is a regular presence at matches at Anfield.
Rush’s illness comes amid a surge in flu cases across the United Kingdom. Health authorities say hospital admissions linked to flu have risen sharply in recent weeks, placing added pressure on the healthcare system.
