Leaders and delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have begun arriving in Ibadan, Oyo State, ahead of Saturday’s much-anticipated national elective convention, despite ongoing legal tussles over its validity.
The buildup follows a ruling by the Oyo State High Court, which on Thursday extended an interim order restraining any interference with the convention scheduled to hold at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan. The court also fixed Friday for hearing of the substantive suit.
Party sources confirmed that several top officials, including the National Secretary of the convention, Senator Ben Obi, sub-committee chairmen, and other senior party figures, have inspected the venue to ensure smooth preparations.
Meanwhile, delegates from across the federation are expected to arrive in the Oyo State capital from Friday.
However, controversy continues to trail the exercise following conflicting court verdicts. Two separate Abuja High Courts had earlier granted injunctions sought by the camps of Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and former Jigawa governor, Sule Lamido, to stop the convention from holding.
Despite the legal uncertainty, the PDP appears determined to proceed with the convention, which is expected to produce a new national leadership and shape the party’s direction ahead of future elections.
