Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has singled out Declan Rice as a potential future England captain following an impressive performance by the Arsenal midfielder in the Premier League.
Rooney watched from the stands as Arsenal ground out a 1-0 win away to Everton on Saturday night, a result that returned Mikel Arteta’s side to the top of the table. Despite the contest lacking fluency, Rice stood out, controlling the midfield and displaying the authority and composure that have increasingly defined his game.
The 26-year-old played a key role throughout the match, dropping deep to collect the ball, shielding the defence and pushing forward when needed. Rooney believes those qualities position Rice as a natural long-term successor to current England captain Harry Kane.
Speaking on Monday, Rooney said Rice already looks prepared for greater responsibility at international level.
“For me, he’s probably the one waiting for Harry to hang up his boots at some point,” Rooney said. “His drive and his personality really stand out. Everyone who knows him seems to love him.
“He was all over the pitch against Everton. His decision-making — when to pass, where to pass, what foot to use — the detail in his passing was a pleasure to watch. He was absolutely incredible.
“He was splitting centre-backs, dropping in to help the defence, then the next minute he was in the box trying to score. Some of the things he does are underrated.
“He’s the right one to take over for me because of his drive and personality. He’s irreplaceable for England,” Rooney added.
