As Rt. Honourable Muktar Betara Aliyu, OON, marks his 59th birthday, Nigerians at home and abroad reflect on the remarkable journey of a leader whose influence has long transcended his constituency. Widely regarded as one of the most impactful lawmakers of his generation, Betara has earned a reputation for visionary leadership, people-centered development, and unwavering national commitment. In an era where public trust in politics is fragile, his model of service stands out as a shining example of what dedicated representation should be.
Born on November 22, 1966, in Biu, Borno State, Betara’s rise mirrors the story of a man driven by purpose rather than ambition. From humble beginnings in Borno’s educational system to professional roles in national establishments such as the Directorate for Food, Roads and Rural Infrastructure and later NITEL, he laid the foundation for a career rooted in diligence and accountability. His eventual transition into politics was not one of convenience but of calling — a desire to affect lives on a broader scale.
Since his first election to the House of Representatives in 2007, Betara has maintained an extraordinary presence in the National Assembly. Representing the Biu/Bayo/Kwaya-Kusar/Shani Federal Constituency across multiple sessions, he has distinguished himself through competence and steady leadership. Over the years, he has chaired strategic committees, including the Committees on Army, Defence, Appropriations, and most recently the Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). His role in stabilising national budgeting systems, particularly the reform that returned Nigeria’s budget cycle to January–December, remains one of the most far-reaching fiscal achievements of the Fourth Republic.
Yet, his greatest imprint remains the profound and measurable impact of his constituency and humanitarian interventions. Betara is celebrated for an unmatched record of developmental projects that have changed the socio-economic reality of communities across southern Borno and beyond. From the construction of critical roads and bridges to extensive rural electrification projects, his efforts have connected long-isolated communities to opportunity and growth. Hundreds of transformers and power installations facilitated under his watch have expanded electricity access in both urban and remote settlements.
His approach to development has always been holistic. In healthcare, he facilitated the construction and equipping of modern primary health centres across all wards of his constituency, ensuring that quality medical services are within reach for thousands of families. In education, his scholarship programmes have enabled countless students — especially orphans and vulnerable youths — to pursue education at secondary and tertiary levels. Schools have also benefitted from new classroom blocks, renovations, and learning materials, aligning his vision with the long-term development needs of his people.
Betara’s empowerment programmes have consistently created pathways for economic independence. Women and youth have received vocational training, micro-grants, and tools including sewing machines, motorcycles, and processing equipment — measures that continue to stimulate local commerce and reduce poverty. His humanitarian efforts, particularly during festive seasons or national crises, reflect deep compassion. Widows, orphans, community leaders, and displaced families have regularly benefitted from large-scale palliatives, food distributions, medical support, and emergency assistance. His intervention in housing has provided decent accommodation for many vulnerable households, restoring dignity and stability to affected families.
In a region plagued by insecurity, Betara has further supported the construction of police stations, security barracks, and operational facilities to strengthen local enforcement capacity. These interventions have complemented federal efforts and helped enhance peace within communities long affected by insurgency.
What makes Betara’s leadership truly exceptional is that his impact extends far beyond his constituency. His calm disposition, strategic mind, and unblemished record have made him a bridge-builder in national politics. Colleagues regard him as one of the most reliable and non-controversial lawmakers, a man who commands respect across party lines. His influence in critical national deliberations has earned him the reputation of a stabiliser — a rare figure who prioritises unity and national interest above political theatrics.
As he turns 59, Rt. Honourable Muktar Betara Aliyu stands as a testament to what public office can achieve when guided by sincerity, empathy, and vision. He is not only a representative of his people but a national asset — a living legend whose leadership continues to shape lives, strengthen institutions, and inspire a new generation of Nigerians.
Today, I join millions around the world to celebrate an icon, an impactful leader, and a visionary whose dedication to service has set a standard of excellence rarely seen in Nigeria’s political landscape.
