Seventeen Lawmakers Dump ADC For NDC Amid Party Crisis

The House of Representatives on Tuesday recorded a fresh round of defections as at least 17 lawmakers formally exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), citing unresolved internal disputes within their former party.

The affected legislators, drawn from Kano, Anambra, Lagos, Edo and Rivers states, conveyed their decisions through separate letters read during plenary. They attributed their defection to persistent crises within the ADC, spanning from the national leadership to grassroots structures.

Among those who switched allegiance is Yusuf Umar Datti, representing Kura/Madobi/Garun Mallam Federal Constituency in Kano State, who said ongoing instability in the party had hindered effective representation of his constituents.

Similarly, Harris Okonkwo, representing Idemili North/Idemili South Federal Constituency of Anambra State, explained that his decision followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders and constituents.

Other defectors include Sani Adamu (Minjibir/Ungogo, Kano); Thaddeus Attah (Eti-Osa, Lagos); Deputy Minority Whip, George Ozodinobi (Njikoka/Anaocha/Dunukofia, Anambra); Lilian Obiageli (Awka North/Awka South, Anambra); and OluwaSeyi Sowunmi (Ojo, Lagos).

Also listed are Peter Anekwe (Anambra East/West); Zakari Umar Mukhtari (Tarauni, Kano); George Olawande (Amuwo Odofin, Lagos); Murphy Osaro Omoruyi (Egor/Ikpoba-Okha, Edo); Umezuruike Manuchim (Port Harcourt I, Rivers); Emeka Idu (Onitsha North/South, Anambra); and Jesse Onuakalusi (Oshodi-Isolo, Lagos).

Others are Ifeanyi Uzokwe (Nnewi North/South/Ekwusigo, Anambra); Afam Ogene (Ogbaru, Anambra); and Kamilu Ado (Wudil/Garko, Kano).

In a separate development, Leke Abejide, representing Yagba Federal Constituency, also announced his defection from the ADC to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The wave of defections drew concern from some lawmakers, who warned that increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections reflect deeper issues of party instability within the National Assembly.

The Speaker acknowledged the notices in line with parliamentary procedure and extended his goodwill to the lawmakers in their new parties.

The development is expected to reshape the balance of power among minority parties in the House, with the ADC likely to experience a significant reduction in its influence in the lower chamber.
