President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed that national security, peace restoration, and the expansion of economic opportunities remain the core priorities of his administration. The message was delivered in Lokoja on Sunday at a memorial service for former Kogi State Governor, Prince Abubakar Audu, by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.
In a statement signed by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, Idris told attendees that the federal government is fully committed to addressing ongoing threats to stability. “We are under no illusions about the recent setbacks and security challenges that have tested our nation’s resolve,” he said. “Let me be unequivocal: the security and welfare of every Nigerian remain the sacred priority of my government. We have therefore taken decisive action.”
Idris highlighted that the recently declared State of Emergency on national security reflects a strengthened approach to combating insecurity, with steps taken to expand manpower, modernise intelligence operations, and advance reforms such as the proposed State Police. “This is not a mere proclamation; it is a declaration of war against all forms of insecurity,” he said. “We will hunt the enemies of our state wherever they may be and restore the peace that is the rightful inheritance of every Nigerian.”
Reforming the security architecture, he added, is critical for lasting peace. “A more localised, community-sensitive security structure will complement the efforts of our national forces and also boost grassroots employment,” Idris noted.
The President also paid tribute to Prince Audu, describing him as a “pivotal figure in Nigeria’s democratic development” and recalling their long-standing political relationship. “His legacy is not a relic of the past; it is a living template of bold leadership and transformative governance,” Tinubu said.
Highlighting economic initiatives, Tinubu outlined plans to modernise livestock farming through large-scale ranching, improved animal husbandry, and value-chain integration. He also emphasised social investment programmes aimed at supporting vulnerable citizens, small businesses, and youth, alongside ongoing infrastructure development to connect markets and industries.
The event was attended by political leaders, family members, and supporters of the late governor.
The President’s renewed security statements come amid a surge of kidnappings in Niger and Kebbi states, including recent abductions of students and staff in Papiri, Niger State, shortly after 25 students were kidnapped in Maga, Kebbi State.
In response, Tinubu has cancelled scheduled trips to South Africa and Angola to coordinate national security strategies, while several northern states have temporarily closed schools as part of precautionary measures.
