President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s determination to intensify the fight against insecurity and secure the release of all individuals currently held captive across the country.
The President declared that Nigeria would not yield to terrorism, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation.
Tinubu’s message was delivered on Sunday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, during the national interdenominational church service held at the National Christian Centre as part of activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
According to a statement issued by the SGF’s media aide, Yomi Odunuga, the President stressed that the Federal Government remains resolute in confronting security threats and protecting citizens across the country.
He described the safety of Nigerians as a top priority, noting that recent incidents of attacks and abductions highlight the need for sustained and enhanced security operations.
Tinubu assured that efforts were ongoing to secure the freedom of all kidnapped persons while providing security agencies with the resources required to safeguard communities and defend the nation’s territorial integrity.
The President also pledged to strengthen efforts aimed at easing economic hardship and improving the delivery of democratic dividends to citizens.
He acknowledged the challenges posed by rising living costs, insecurity, kidnappings and displacement in several parts of the country, assuring Nigerians that the government remains committed to addressing the issues decisively.
As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum, Tinubu urged citizens to reject violence, hate speech and divisive politics, warning against actions capable of undermining democratic values.
He specifically appealed to young people not to allow themselves to be used for political violence, misinformation campaigns or acts of thuggery, urging them to safeguard their future and act responsibly.
The President further called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, the media, civil society organisations and families to promote peace, tolerance and national unity as the country approaches another electoral cycle.
Tinubu also commended members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in protecting the nation and sustaining democratic governance.
Nigeria is set to mark 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule on June 12, 2026, commemorating the return to civilian governance in 1999 and honouring the contributions of pro-democracy activists associated with the June 12 struggle.
The anniversary comes amid continuing economic pressures and security challenges, including terrorism, banditry and kidnapping, which remain key concerns for both citizens and the Federal Government.
