Turaki Promises Reforms, End to Impunity as He Assumes PDP Leadership
Newly elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kabiru Turaki, has vowed to steer the party toward a new era of internal reforms, strengthening democratic processes and eliminating impunity within its ranks.
Delivering his acceptance speech on Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State, Turaki said he was fully aware of the magnitude of the responsibility placed on his shoulders, but affirmed that the PDP had the capacity and experience needed to reposition itself.
“The cross you have given us means that you also expect us to take it to the Nigerian people, and that we shall do,” he said. “We are not under any illusion that the task ahead is a simple one. Our party is at a crossroads, but we are up to the task and ready for the challenge.”
Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, added that the newly inaugurated National Working Committee would soon present a blueprint outlining its principles and strategic direction.
“Very soon, we shall roll out what our guiding principles will be and the modus operandi for achieving them,” he said. “When we do that, we shall be hitting the ground running from day one.”
He pledged to uphold the mandate entrusted to him, stressing that the PDP remains firmly rooted in popular support.
“Today, the only political party that has retained its name since its creation is the Peoples Democratic Party. This has been possible because it is the party of the Nigerian people,” he said. “Make no mistake about it—we are returning the party to you. There will be no more impunity.”
Turaki’s emergence followed a competitive national convention attended by delegates from 17 states at the Lekan Salami Stadium.
He secured 1,516 votes to defeat Senator Yakubu Danmarke, who garnered 275 votes, according to the announcement made by former Senator Ben Obi, who oversaw the exercise.
Obi also confirmed that former Oyo State Deputy Governor, Taofeek Arapaja, was elected as the National Secretary of the party.
