The Yobe State Government has inaugurated the Ngalda Modern Market in Fika Local Government Area, renaming it the Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya Modern Market in honour of the Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya. The development marks another significant step in the state’s efforts to deepen economic growth, strengthen regional ties and promote inclusive development.
The commissioning ceremony was jointly performed by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya and the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, CON, with the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters, Alhaji Ibrahim Kabir Masari, in attendance. The event drew government officials, traditional leaders, traders and residents, reflecting the importance of the project to the local economy and the wider region.
Speaking at the event, Governor Buni said the decision to name the modern market after Governor Inuwa Yahaya was a recognition of his contributions to governance, infrastructural development and the promotion of cordial inter-state relations. He explained that the gesture symbolises appreciation for visionary leadership and a shared commitment to improving the lives of citizens through people-oriented policies.
Governor Buni further noted that the initiative reflects the spirit of cooperation among states, particularly in the North-East, where collaboration remains critical to economic recovery, regional integration and sustainable growth. According to him, development efforts are more effective when states work together to harness shared opportunities and address common challenges.
The newly inaugurated market is designed to serve as a commercial hub for Fika Local Government Area and its environs. Strategically located, it is expected to stimulate trade, enhance internally generated revenue and provide a more organised, secure and hygienic environment for traders. The facility is also projected to improve the ease of doing business and attract investment, thereby strengthening the local economy.
In his remarks, Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Yobe State for the honour bestowed on him. He commended Governor Buni for his foresight and consistent focus on infrastructure and economic development, describing the market as a clear demonstration of purposeful leadership.
As part of activities marking the inauguration, Governor Inuwa Yahaya announced a donation of ₦10 million to the Marketers’ Association to support their relocation from the old market site to the new facility. The gesture is expected to ease the transition for traders and encourage full utilisation of the modern market.
The Ngalda Modern Market project aligns with Governor Mai Mala Buni’s broader development agenda, which has prioritised infrastructure, economic empowerment and social stability across Yobe State. Over the years, his administration has pursued initiatives aimed at strengthening local economies, supporting trade and creating opportunities for citizens.
With the inauguration of the Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya Modern Market, Yobe State adds another critical asset to its economic infrastructure. The market is expected to boost commercial activities, improve livelihoods and contribute significantly to socio-economic development, while also standing as a symbol of inter-state cooperation and purposeful governance in the region.
