Yobe Moves to Boost Health Workforce as Gov. Buni Employs 156 Nursing Graduates

In a significant step toward strengthening healthcare delivery in Yobe State, Governor Mai Mala Buni has approved automatic employment for 156 graduates of the State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Damaturu.

The approval was announced on Tuesday during the graduation ceremony of nurses and midwives, an event that also featured the unveiling of a magazine highlighting key achievements of the Buni administration at the College.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Buni emphasized that the decision to absorb the graduates into the state workforce was part of deliberate efforts to address the shortage of skilled health personnel and improve access to quality medical services, particularly in rural communities.

He noted that the healthcare sector remains a priority of his administration, stressing that investment in trained personnel is essential to achieving sustainable improvements in service delivery.

“The automatic employment of these graduates is a strategic intervention to strengthen our healthcare system and ensure that our people receive the care they deserve,” the governor said. “We are committed to creating opportunities for our young professionals while meeting the pressing needs of our communities.”

The governor also charged the newly employed nurses and midwives to demonstrate professionalism, discipline, and compassion in the discharge of their duties, reminding them of their critical role in safeguarding public health.

The Provost of the College, in his remarks, commended the state government for its continued support, noting that the institution has recorded notable progress in infrastructure, academic standards, and accreditation under the present administration. He added that the College has been repositioned to produce competent and globally competitive healthcare professionals.

The ceremony attracted government officials, stakeholders in the health and education sectors, and community leaders, many of whom praised the initiative as a timely response to the growing demand for healthcare services in the state.

The launch of the commemorative magazine formed a major highlight of the event, documenting the strides made by the College in recent years, including facility upgrades, programme expansion, and policy reforms that have enhanced training capacity.

Graduates who spoke at the event expressed appreciation to the state government for the opportunity, describing the gesture as both encouraging and life-changing. They pledged to contribute meaningfully to the development of the state’s healthcare system.

The move is expected to ease the burden on existing medical personnel and expand the reach of healthcare services across Yobe State.

Governor Buni reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to sustain investments in critical sectors such as health and education, noting that such efforts are central to improving the quality of life for citizens.

The development underscores the state government’s ongoing commitment to building a resilient healthcare system through strategic human resource development.
