Arsenal to End Rwanda Sponsorship Deal Amid Renewed Scrutiny Over Regional Conflict

Arsenal will conclude their long-running partnership with Rwanda at the end of the current season, the Rwanda Development Board announced on Wednesday. The decision brings an eight-season collaboration to a close, during which the “Visit Rwanda” logo featured prominently on the Premier League club’s shirt sleeves.

The deal had increasingly attracted criticism as violence escalated in the mineral-rich eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, which borders Rwanda. Authorities in the DRC accuse Rwanda of backing the M23 rebel group, whose renewed offensive since 2021 has resulted in mass displacement, thousands of deaths and a deepening humanitarian crisis. Although recent ceasefire and peace agreements have been signed, tensions remain high.

Fan pressure also mounted earlier this year, with a section of Arsenal supporters protesting against the sponsorship, citing concerns over Rwanda’s alleged role in the conflict.

In its statement, the Rwanda Development Board said: “Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have mutually agreed to conclude their partnership at the end of this season, bringing to a close an eight-season collaboration that included Visit Rwanda as Arsenal’s first Official Sleeve Partner.”

Despite the termination of the Arsenal agreement, Rwanda continues to maintain commercial partnerships with other major European clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.

On the pitch, Arsenal recently saw their 10-match winning streak halted after a dramatic 2-2 draw against Sunderland. Brian Brobbey’s stoppage-time equaliser denied the league leaders a record-extending run, despite earlier goals from Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard. Dan Ballard had initially put Sunderland in front, ending Arsenal’s run of eight straight clean sheets.

Manager Mikel Arteta, reflecting on the result, admitted his side needed to improve defensively but praised their determination. “We conceded two similar goals, which is not good enough for ourselves,” he said. “But it’s true that we showed incredible resilience and courage to come back.”

As Arsenal continue their push for a first Premier League title since 2004, they currently sit six points ahead of second-placed Chelsea, who defeated Wolves 3-0. Manchester City narrowed the gap to four points after securing a victory over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.
