Arsenal’s 18-match unbeaten Premier League run came to an abrupt end on Saturday after Aston Villa clinched a dramatic 2–1 victory with virtually the final kick of the contest.
According to a post-match report on Arsenal’s website, it was Emilio Buendia who delivered the decisive blow deep into stoppage time, securing a fifth consecutive league win for the hosts.
What had been a breathless, end-to-end encounter between two of the league’s early pacesetters appeared to be heading for a draw until a late scramble in the Arsenal penalty area proved costly. After David Raya made a sharp save amid the chaos, the rebound fell kindly for Buendia, who converted from close range to spark wild celebrations at Villa Park and hand Arsenal their first league defeat since August.
Arsenal had earlier fought their way back into the game through Leandro Trossard, who continued his excellent scoring form. Introduced at halftime, the Belgian grabbed his 50th Premier League goal when he tucked home after Emiliano Martínez parried Bukayo Saka’s effort.
Villa, however, had struck first. Matty Cash opened the scoring in the 36th minute, latching onto a Pau Torres cross that had deflected off Jurrien Timber before arriving perfectly at the far post. Cash drilled his finish between Raya’s legs to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Despite Arsenal creating opportunities of their own, they were repeatedly denied by former goalkeeper Martínez, who kept out a powerful Saka drive, saved from Martin Ødegaard at close range and tipped an Ødegaard curler over the bar in the second period.
Manager Mikel Arteta’s halftime changes injected urgency into Arsenal’s play, with Viktor Gyökeres and Trossard adding fresh energy. Trossard came close moments before scoring the equaliser, briefly shifting momentum in Arsenal’s favour.
But Villa rallied once more, forcing Raya into a string of vital stops as Ollie Watkins pressed for a goal. Substitute Donyell Malen fired narrowly wide and Noni Madueke struck the side-netting in a tense finale before Buendia’s late intervention sealed a dramatic result.
Arsenal now face a quick turnaround as they prepare to meet Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday. They return to Premier League action on Saturday against Wolves before travelling to Everton on December 20.
