Former Sports Franchise Owner Tom Hicks Dies at 79

American businessman and former professional sports team owner Tom Hicks has passed away at the age of 79. His death occurred on Saturday in Dallas, where he was surrounded by family, according to a statement from Hicks Holdings LLC, which was later shared on Liverpool’s official website.

Hicks was a notable figure in U.S. sports ownership. He led the NHL’s Dallas Stars from 1995 to 2011, guiding the team through its Stanley Cup victory in 1999. He also owned the Texas Rangers between 1998 and 2010, during which the baseball club made a World Series appearance.

His foray into English football began in 2007 when he purchased a 50 per cent stake in Liverpool FC. However, his tenure at the Premier League club became controversial, marked by financial disputes and management tensions that eventually resulted in the team’s sale.

Tributes poured in following the news of his death. Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, described Hicks as a towering figure in sports and a trusted friend.

“Tom was a close friend and a great partner. He dreamed big, and watching him bring the Stanley Cup to Dallas is something I will always cherish,” Jones said, adding that Hicks had a unique connection with fans and the community.

Hicks is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cinda Cree Hicks, six children, and 14 grandchildren. In a statement, his family noted that despite his many achievements, his most treasured role was that of a father.

“No matter the trials he faced, he remained generous and loving toward his family,” they said.
