The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed that former Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is now eligible to represent Nigeria at international level following the approval of his change of nationality.
Okonkwo, 24, was born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents and had previously featured for England across several youth categories, including the U-15, U-16, U-17 and U-18 teams. He has now opted to commit his international future to Nigeria at senior level.
Reacting to the development, the NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, said the federation welcomed the addition of the goalkeeper, noting that it strengthens competition within the squad. He told ESPN that the NFF is pleased whenever quality players choose to represent Nigeria and add options in key positions.
With his eligibility confirmed, Okonkwo is set to compete for a place in the Super Eagles squad alongside current first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, as well as Maduka Okoye, Amas Obasogie, Francis Uzoho and Ebenezer Harcourt. His arrival is expected to further bolster Nigeria’s goalkeeping department.
