The Federal Government has confirmed that all group-stage bonuses owed to the Super Eagles at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations have been released, with payments expected to reflect in the players’ domiciliary accounts within hours.
The Minister of State for Finance, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, made the disclosure on Thursday amid reports that the national team was considering a boycott of training sessions and might refuse to travel to Marrakesh for their quarter-final encounter against Algeria over unpaid entitlements.
In a statement posted on her official X handle, Uzoka-Anite said the concerns had been addressed following coordinated efforts between the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria. According to her, the two institutions had streamlined processes to ensure quicker and more predictable disbursements in line with international best practices.
She explained that all bonuses earned by the players during the group stage of the tournament had been fully processed and cleared through the required regulatory procedures. The minister added that a fast-track mechanism was introduced to accommodate the players’ preference for payment in foreign currency.
Uzoka-Anite said the final phase of the payment process was already in progress, with transfers to the players’ domiciliary accounts underway. She noted that the funds were expected to reflect starting Thursday or, at the latest, Friday.
Emphasising the government’s commitment to the team, the minister said priority was being placed on the welfare and morale of the players as they move into the knockout rounds of the competition. She assured that efforts were being made to prevent off-field issues from distracting the team from their performance.
The development is expected to calm tensions around the Super Eagles’ preparations as they continue their AFCON 2025 campaign and focus on their quarter-final fixture.
