Chelsea, West Ham Fined Over Stamford Bridge Melee

Chelsea F.C. and West Ham United F.C. have been fined £325,000 and £300,000 respectively following a mass confrontation during their Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge in January.

The altercation broke out deep into added time after Chelsea forward João Pedro reacted angrily to a shove from West Ham winger Adama Traoré on defender Marc Cucurella. The situation quickly escalated, with players from both sides becoming involved in heated exchanges.

Referee Anthony Taylor halted proceedings as tensions flared, and after a prolonged VAR review, West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo was shown a red card for grabbing João Pedro by the neck.

In a statement released on Wednesday, The Football Association confirmed that both clubs admitted to breaching disciplinary rules. The FA alleged that Chelsea failed to prevent their players from behaving in an improper and provocative manner around the 95th minute, while West Ham were charged with failing to control their players’ improper, provocative and, in one case, violent conduct.

An independent regulatory commission described the episode as a serious and unsightly incident involving multiple players. In its written reasons, the commission noted that while Cucurella was not entirely blameless and appeared to invite a reaction from Traoré, the winger’s response was deemed disproportionate and triggered the wider confrontation.

The commission further observed that three Chelsea players attempted to incite the home crowd during and after the melee, stating there was no justification for such conduct regardless of the match circumstances.

Todibo’s dismissal for violent conduct was upheld. However, the panel found no evidence of violent behaviour from other West Ham players, though it concluded that several contributed to the disorder through improper and provocative actions.

Both clubs’ prior breaches of FA Rule E20.1, which prohibits improper, abusive or provocative conduct, were factored into the sanctions imposed.

The confrontation came shortly after Chelsea completed a dramatic comeback from 2-0 down to secure a 3-2 victory, with Enzo Fernández netting a stoppage-time winner before tempers boiled over at the final whistle.
