Peter Obi has expressed concern over what he described as a disturbing development in Nigeria’s democratic environment following the reported arrest of a cleric who hosted him during a recent visit to Kaduna.
In a statement shared on Tuesday through his social media account, Obi said he received information that Ahmad Tijjani Umar was taken into custody shortly after hosting him on Sunday.
The former Anambra governor said the incident raises questions about the state of civil liberties and democratic freedoms in the country.
According to him, actions perceived as harassment of citizens or political associates could further weaken confidence in democratic institutions if not properly addressed.
Obi stated that freedom of speech and movement must remain protected in any democratic setting, stressing that suppression of dissent is inconsistent with democratic values.
He urged authorities to ensure that all actions taken against citizens are guided by the rule of law and constitutional principles.
The former presidential candidate also warned against measures that could deepen concerns about intimidation or political persecution.
He appealed to relevant institutions to avoid actions capable of undermining the country’s already fragile democratic system.
As of Tuesday morning, no official statement had been issued by security authorities explaining the circumstances surrounding the reported arrest.
