DR Congo Reach World Cup After Extra-Time Victory Over Jamaica

Democratic Republic of the Congo secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1-0 extra-time victory over Jamaica, ending a 52-year absence from the global tournament.

A decisive goal from Axel Tuanzebe in the 100th minute sealed the win and confirmed the Leopards’ place as the 47th team for the competition.

The match was decided in Guadalajara, where Tuanzebe converted from a corner delivered by Brian Cipenga, with the ball taking a deflection beyond Andre Blake in goal for Jamaica.

The result marks DR Congo’s first World Cup qualification since 1974, when the country appeared at the tournament under the name Zaire.

The Congolese side controlled much of the early play, with Cédric Bakambu twice denied by offside decisions.

Jamaica responded after the break and created opportunities from dead-ball situations but could not break down a disciplined Congolese defence.

The winning goal was confirmed after a lengthy VAR review, prompting celebrations among players and officials.

DR Congo are now placed in Group K, where they will face Portugal, Uzbekistan and Colombia.

They are scheduled to begin their campaign against Portugal in Houston, Texas.
