Zulum Backs Gubio For 2027 Borno Governorship Race Amid APC Tensions

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has signalled his support for his former Commissioner for Works, Mustapha Gubio, as the preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election, a development that could reshape dynamics within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor’s spokesperson, Malam Dauda Iliya, confirmed the endorsement on Tuesday, stating that Gubio possesses the experience and alignment needed to sustain the administration’s policies and projects.

According to Iliya, Gubio’s role in the current administration positions him as a natural successor capable of advancing ongoing development efforts across the state.

The endorsement came shortly after Gubio formally presented his expression of interest and nomination forms to the governor, in a move widely seen as a public affirmation of political backing.

The occasion, which featured prominent figures including Senate Chief Whip, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, has been interpreted by observers as an early consolidation of support ahead of party primaries.

However, the development has generated debate within APC ranks in Borno, with some analysts cautioning that it could heighten internal divisions.

Attention has particularly focused on the perceived influence of Vice President Kashim Shettima, whose political structure in the state is considered significant.

Analysts suggest that differing interests among key stakeholders may complicate efforts to maintain party cohesion as the election cycle approaches.

Gubio’s emergence adds to a growing list of aspirants within the APC, setting the stage for what is expected to be a competitive primary contest.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the timetable for the 2027 general elections. Presidential and National Assembly polls are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will take place on February 6, 2027.

The commission indicated that party primaries, including dispute resolution, will be conducted between April 23 and May 30, 2026. Campaign activities for presidential and National Assembly elections are set to commence on August 19, 2026, with governorship and state assembly campaigns beginning on September 9, 2026.
