Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who served as the vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, has disclosed plans to exit the party and align with the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
Speaking during a political programme on Tuesday, Baba-Ahmed attributed his decision to unresolved internal disputes and what he described as a shift away from the party’s original principles.
He indicated that recent developments within the Labour Party, including certain internal decisions, contributed to his dissatisfaction, alleging that the party no longer reflects the ideals it once upheld.
The former vice-presidential candidate stated that his resignation would take effect at midnight, after which he would formally join the PRP, describing the party as a platform with a longstanding political heritage.
The PRP, founded by the late Aminu Kano in 1978, is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s oldest political movements, known for its progressive orientation.
Baba-Ahmed was the running mate to Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, a campaign that attracted considerable support, particularly among young voters, and challenged the dominance of the country’s major political parties, despite not securing victory at the polls.
