African Players in Europe: Salah Struggles as Liverpool Falter Again

Mohamed Salah endured another difficult outing in the Premier League as Liverpool suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, extending the Egyptian’s lean spell in front of goal.

Salah, who claimed last season’s Golden Boot with 29 goals, has scored only four times in the league this term — his most recent coming in early November against Aston Villa. His drought mirrors Liverpool’s broader struggles, with the team now sitting 11th after 12 matches.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland leads the scoring charts with 14 goals, while the top African performer so far is Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, who has found the net six times.

Across Europe’s major leagues, several African players delivered standout performances over the weekend:

ENGLAND

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool):
The 33-year-old forward continues to search for form as Liverpool’s inconsistent run persists. Their latest defeat marked their sixth loss of the season.

Samuel Chukwueze (Fulham):
Chukwueze made a decisive impact off the bench, delivering a precise cross for Raul Jimenez to score the winner in Fulham’s 1-0 triumph over Sunderland. Nigerians Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi also featured from the start.

Lyle Foster, Hannibal Mejbri (Burnley):
Both were introduced in Burnley’s 2-0 loss to Chelsea, but neither could alter the course of the match as the home side struggled to create clear chances.

GERMANY

Nicolas Jackson (Bayern Munich):
The Senegalese forward, on loan from Chelsea, capped Bayern’s dramatic 6-2 comeback against Freiburg with a late tap-in, marking his second league goal of the season.

Edmond Tapsoba (Bayer Leverkusen):
Tapsoba continued his impressive scoring streak, heading home his third goal in seven matches during Leverkusen’s 3-1 win over Wolfsburg.

FRANCE

Ismaelo Ganiou, Morgan Guilavogui (Lens):
Ganiou’s well-taken second-half strike secured a 1-0 victory for Lens over Strasbourg, lifting them to third place in Ligue 1. Guilavogui, introduced later in the match, was sent off in stoppage time.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Marseille):
Aubameyang put recent international disappointment aside by netting the opener in Marseille’s emphatic 5-1 win over Nice. The result kept them second in the league.

Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal (Rennes):
The Moroccan defender scored the opener in Rennes’ 4-1 victory against Monaco, a win that pushed the club up to sixth place in the table.
