Arsenal F.C. secured a vital 2–1 victory over London rivals Chelsea F.C. on Sunday, with Jurrien Timber scoring the decisive goal in a match largely shaped by set-piece situations.
The encounter at the Emirates Stadium saw both teams capitalise on corner kicks, highlighting the growing influence of dead-ball situations in the Premier League.
William Saliba opened the scoring for Arsenal in the first half, registering his first goal since December 2024. Chelsea responded shortly before the interval when a dangerous corner delivered by Reece James forced Piero Hincapie into an own goal.
However, Timber restored Arsenal’s advantage in the second half with a well-timed header, while Chelsea’s situation worsened when winger Pedro Neto was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
The victory marked Arsenal’s second consecutive league win and restored their five-point lead over Manchester City F.C., who had briefly reduced the gap following a 1–0 win against Leeds United F.C. a day earlier.
Manager Mikel Arteta saw his side respond strongly after recent criticism regarding their mentality during a brief dip in form. The Gunners had already boosted confidence with a 4–1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur F.C. last weekend.
Arsenal will now turn their attention to a midweek fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. as they continue their pursuit of a first league title since 2004. The club remains active on multiple fronts, having reached the League Cup final and advanced to the last 16 of the Champions League as well as the fifth round of the FA Cup.
For Chelsea, the defeat represents a setback in their bid to secure Champions League qualification. The result extended their winless run to three matches and left them sixth in the table under manager Liam Rosenior.
Arsenal threatened early when Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez nearly conceded after losing possession under pressure from Viktor Gyokeres, though he managed to clear the danger.
The hosts eventually broke the deadlock in the 21st minute from a rehearsed corner routine designed by set-piece coach Nicolas Jover. Gabriel Magalhaes rose highest to meet Bukayo Saka’s delivery, nodding the ball into the six-yard box where Saliba headed goalward before the effort deflected in off Mamadou Sarr.
Chelsea equalised just before half-time after Arsenal failed to deal with another James corner, which ultimately resulted in Hincapie turning the ball into his own net.
The decisive moment arrived in the 66th minute when Timber rose to meet Declan Rice’s corner and powered a header past Sanchez. Chelsea protested for a foul on the goalkeeper, but the goal stood.
Arsenal fans celebrated their team’s 16th league goal from a corner this season, chanting in appreciation of their set-piece effectiveness.
Chelsea’s task became even more difficult when Neto, already booked for protesting Timber’s goal, received a second yellow card for a late challenge on Gabriel Martinelli.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Chelsea nearly snatched a late equaliser, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya produced a crucial stoppage-time save to deny Alejandro Garnacho and secure the win for the league leaders.
