CAF Clears ’ Playoff Clash Against DR Congo
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is eligible to play in Sunday’s high-stakes World Cup playoff against the Democratic Republic of Congo, easing growing concerns among Nigerian supporters.
Speculation had mounted that Ndidi would be sidelined due to yellow-card accumulation from earlier rounds of the qualifiers. However, a statement issued via the Super Eagles’ official X handle on Saturday clarified the situation, noting that CAF had ruled that bookings from the qualification stage do not transfer into the playoff phase. Only players already serving confirmed suspensions remain ineligible.
“CAF has confirmed that Wilfred Ndidi is eligible to feature for the Super Eagles in Sunday’s playoff clash against DR Congo. Cautions accumulated during the World Cup qualifiers do not carry over into the playoffs; only confirmed suspensions apply,” the statement said.
Ndidi, who captained the side during Thursday’s 4–1 semi-final victory over Gabon, was one of the standout performers, anchoring the midfield with authority. He also provided the assist for Chidera Ejuke’s goal, which doubled Nigeria’s lead.
The Super Eagles face DR Congo on Sunday at 8 p.m. Nigerian time, with the winner advancing to the intercontinental playoff—Africa’s final pathway to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
