Former Cameroon striker and current FECAFOOT president Samuel Eto’o has been suspended for four matches and fined $20,000 after the Confederation of African Football ruled that he breached sportsmanship rules during the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Morocco.
In a statement released on Friday, CAF said Eto’o’s behaviour during the match in Rabat violated its disciplinary standards. Cameroon lost the encounter 2-0 to the hosts.
Reports indicated that Eto’o reacted angrily to several refereeing decisions, making gestures from the stands that attracted the attention of officials, including CAF President Patrice Motsepe, who was present at the stadium.
CAF later launched a broader probe into incidents of misconduct during the quarter-final stage, citing “violent confrontations and unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials.”
Cameroon’s football federation has strongly rejected the sanction, arguing that the disciplinary process fell short of fair trial standards. FECAFOOT announced on Wednesday that it stood firmly behind Eto’o and was considering an appeal.
Eto’o has led the federation since 2021, but his tenure has been fraught with disputes and allegations of governance lapses, conflicts of interest, and administrative irregularities.
While some domestic football figures have criticised his leadership style, Eto’o has consistently defended his record, insisting that his administration has introduced meaningful reforms and positive changes in Cameroonian football.
