Court Terminates Charges Against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan

The Abuja High Court on Thursday brought a closely watched legal dispute to a close by striking out criminal charges filed by the Federal Government against Kogi Central lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The decision followed the submission of a Notice of Discontinuance by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, effectively withdrawing the defamation and related charges that had earlier been brought against the senator. Court documents indicated that the notice, dated December 12, 2025, formally ended proceedings in suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/195/2025.

Justice C. N. Oji, who presided over the case, acknowledged the filing and ruled that the matter be struck out. In his brief comments, the judge stressed the importance of measured use of prosecutorial authority, expressing hope that the development would encourage greater respect for due process and democratic principles.

Government counsel confirmed the withdrawal in open court, stating that the decision was taken in line with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and in the broader interest of justice and public trust in the legal system.

Speaking to reporters after the session, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan welcomed the outcome, describing it as a validation of her stance. She reaffirmed her commitment to her constituents and to the protection of democratic freedoms, while expressing gratitude to her legal team and supporters.

The case had triggered widespread public debate on free speech and the boundaries of state prosecution, with civil society groups previously criticising the charges as an attempt to suppress political expression.
