DHQ Clarifies Scope Of US Military Engagement In Nigeria

The Defence Headquarters has stated that ongoing security engagements involving the United States are being carried out with full regard for Nigeria’s sovereignty and within established bilateral agreements.

The clarification follows widespread online reports suggesting the presence of American troops operating in Nigeria.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces of Nigeria said the country’s security relationship with the United States is long-standing and structured around mutual respect.

According to the statement, the partnership focuses on capacity development, professional military training, intelligence cooperation, logistics assistance and strategic dialogue aimed at tackling terrorism and other cross-border security threats.

Uba said all interactions are governed by existing frameworks and respect Nigeria’s independence and territorial authority.

He noted that a recent two-day working session brought senior US officials together with Nigerian counterparts at the Office of the National Security Adviser. The meeting followed earlier consultations in the United States and was described as part of a trust-based engagement focused on practical security outcomes.

Discussions at the session, he said, included proposals to strengthen cooperation channels, improve coordination and ensure accountability in joint responses to violent threats, while prioritising civilian protection.

The proposals are currently under review by the relevant Nigerian authorities.

The Defence Headquarters emphasised that all international defence partnerships are guided by national interest and measurable benefits, assuring citizens that such collaborations remain transparent and consistent with constitutional provisions.

It added that the Armed Forces remain committed to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity while working with credible partners to reinforce the country’s security architecture without undermining national sovereignty.
