fernandes reveals dream five-a-side lineup

Manchester United and Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has unveiled his ideal five-a-side team, highlighting the players he has shared the pitch with over his career. Speaking to Rio Ferdinand on the latest episode of Rio Ferdinand Presents, Fernandes put together a lineup that combines technical flair, experience, and personal chemistry.

Defence was the only area where Fernandes made a concession. After some deliberation, he settled on Pepe as his sole defender, favoring the veteran centre-back over Raphael Varane due to the extended time they spent together. Fernandes also credited Pepe with helping him adjust to life in the Portugal national team, joking about being fatigued by the defender’s constant cycling posts on social media.

In midfield, Fernandes opted for Juan Mata and Paul Pogba. Mata, he said, is one of the most technically gifted players he has ever played alongside and a remarkable character off the pitch. Pogba earned high praise as well, described as the most complete midfielder Fernandes has seen in years. Reflecting on Pogba’s peak at Juventus, Fernandes recalled the difficulty of marking him, noting the stark physical and technical mismatch.

Up front, Cristiano Ronaldo was a straightforward choice, hailed by Fernandes as the ultimate goalscorer. The final spot, however, surprised some observers. Instead of choosing a contemporary star, Fernandes selected Udinese legend Antonio Di Natale, commending his loyalty and remarkable consistency. Fernandes highlighted Di Natale’s goal-to-game ratio and his ability to score prolifically despite playing for a club frequently battling relegation.

The resulting five-a-side squad—Pepe, Juan Mata, Paul Pogba, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Antonio Di Natale—reflects Fernandes’ focus on both skill and personal rapport. While acknowledging he could have chosen several other players, Fernandes emphasized the importance of chemistry and camaraderie in assembling the team.
