Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says he remains uncertain about when midfielder Rodri will be fit to return, as the Spaniard continues to struggle with injury setbacks.
Rodri, who missed a large part of last season with a knee problem, has featured for just one minute in City’s last 10 matches due to a hamstring issue. The 29-year-old will not be available for Tuesday’s Premier League visit to Fulham and is also a doubt for Saturday’s home game against Sunderland.
Asked at a brief press conference on Monday whether Rodri was ready to return, Guardiola simply replied, “No, not yet.” Pressed further on his chances for the weekend, the City manager admitted, “I don’t know.”
Guardiola also brushed off questions concerning goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who received his fourth yellow card during Saturday’s dramatic 3–2 win over Leeds. Leeds manager Daniel Farke had accused the Italian of exaggerating an injury to give Guardiola time to pass instructions to his players — a claim City have not engaged with publicly.
“Yes, he has a lot (of bookings), he has many,” Guardiola said. “It is what it is.” He added that he had not discussed the matter with the goalkeeper.
The City manager was, however, more forthcoming when assessing Fulham ahead of the match at Craven Cottage. He praised Marco Silva’s side following their spirited 2–1 win over Tottenham, noting that Fulham have consistently proven difficult opponents.
“Marco is many, many years there, and always when we have been there — really, really tough games,” Guardiola said. “The organisation is exceptional, and every year I have the feeling that, with the ball, they are better and better. Tough, tough opponent.”
He added that Fulham’s recent performances against top sides such as Chelsea, Arsenal and Sunderland underline how challenging Tuesday’s game will be for City.
