Neymar Leads Santos to Remarkable Last-Day Escape in Brazilian Serie A

Santos pulled off one of the most dramatic survival acts in recent Brazilian football history on Sunday night, overcoming title-chasing Cruzeiro 3–0 at Vila Belmiro to secure their Serie A status on the final day of the season.

Central to the turnaround was Neymar — emotional, visibly struggling with injury, yet decisive in the critical moments. The 33-year-old, who returned to his boyhood club in January after an injury-hit spell abroad, played a vital role in Santos’s late-season resurgence despite battling a persistent knee problem.

Neymar’s influence had been evident in the weeks leading up to the finale. He scored in a 3–0 win over Sport Recife, netted a hat-trick in another 3–0 victory against Juventude, and dictated play throughout the decisive match against Cruzeiro. The late surge lifted Santos to 12th place with 47 points, rescuing a campaign that once appeared destined to end in a second relegation.

On Sunday, Thaciano struck twice in quick succession in the 26th and 28th minutes, before J. Schmidt added a third shortly after the hour mark. The win sealed Santos’s survival, a relief made palpable by the scenes inside Vila Belmiro — and by Neymar’s reaction at full-time, when he fell to his knees in the centre circle, overwhelmed by emotion.

Despite his limited league appearances — just 19 matches — Neymar registered eight goals and several decisive performances. Speaking after the match, he admitted the toll of playing through injury, saying he had pushed himself through “tough weeks” and now needed rest ahead of a planned knee surgery.

“I came for this, to try to help the best way I can,” he said. “If it weren’t for those who supported me, I wouldn’t have played these matches because of the injuries. I need to rest, and then we will have this surgery.”

On social media, the club captain posted images from the emotional night accompanied by the words, “Deus, OBRIGADO!” — “God, Thank You.”

Neymar has not yet been selected by national team coach Carlo Ancelotti since the Italian took over in May, but his form in the final stretch has reignited interest in his potential return to the Brazil squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

For Santos supporters, this season’s survival will be remembered as one of the club’s great escape stories — a campaign in which their most famous academy graduate once again carried the team when it mattered most.

Neymar’s journey has been closely followed since his departure from Santos to Barcelona in 2013, followed by moves to Paris Saint-Germain and later Al-Hilal. In January 2025, he ended his injury-stricken spell in Saudi Arabia after mutually terminating his contract with the Riyadh club.

Sunday’s triumph served not only as a lifeline for Santos but also as a reaffirmation of Neymar’s enduring connection to the club that launched his career.
