Jessica Oji etched her name into African athletics history after producing a commanding 18.50m throw to clinch gold at the Ivy League Indoor Championships, setting a new continental record in the women’s shot put.
Representing Nigeria in only her third appearance under the national flag, Oji opened her series with a decisive 18.50m (60ft 8.50in) effort, a mark that secured victory and established new African and Nigerian records.
Her throw surpassed the 18.48m recorded a day earlier by South Africa’s Mine de Klerk, who had broken the long-standing continental benchmark previously held by Vivian Chukwuemeka.
Beyond rewriting the African record books, Oji’s performance also set a new all-time Ivy League record. She was subsequently named the women’s Most Outstanding Field Performer of the championships, underscoring her dominance throughout the competition.
The freshman at the University of Pennsylvania delivered four valid throws in a composed outing, with her opening mark proving unassailable. Cameroon’s Angeludi Asaah placed second with 16.14m, more than two metres adrift of Oji’s winning distance.
The milestone caps a remarkable spell for the 18-year-old, who switched allegiance from the United States to Nigeria in early February under World Athletics eligibility rules. Having represented the U.S. until February 2, 2026, she became eligible to compete for Nigeria the following day.
Her transition has yielded immediate impact. At the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson two weeks ago, Oji marked her Nigerian debut with a 17.74m throw to finish second overall, setting a new Nigerian Under-20 record.
Even before her eligibility switch was finalised, Oji had demonstrated her potential. In January, she produced an 18.45m effort in collegiate competition, setting an Ivy League record and climbing to second on the NCAA rankings. That throw exceeded Chukwuemeka’s 18.43m African record but could not be formally recognised as a continental mark at the time.
Now officially eligible, Oji has emphatically claimed the record, restoring it to Nigerian hands and positioning herself among the leading collegiate shot putters in the United States this season.
Crowned U.S. Under-20 shot put champion in 2025 prior to enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania, Oji’s swift ascent from youth champion to African record holder highlights her status as one of the continent’s most promising field athletes.
Still in her first year of collegiate competition, the teenager’s trajectory suggests that further milestones may yet lie ahead.
