Victor Osimhen has downplayed criticism over his missed chances in Nigeria’s 4–1 victory against Gabon, insisting that inconsistency in front of goal is part of a striker’s job.
The Super Eagles forward, who eventually scored twice in extra time to help Nigeria advance in the World Cup qualifying playoffs, said he has learned to stay calm under pressure, whether playing for the national team or his Saudi club, Al Nassr.
In a video shared on Instagram on Thursday, Osimhen reflected on the nature of goal scoring and the expectations placed on him.
“Sometimes I score the goal that no one believes, and sometimes I miss the one everyone expects me to score,” he said. “But that doesn’t take anything away. I always have this mentality.”
Osimhen admitted he was disappointed after missing two clear chances during regulation time, but he said he was determined to make amends.
“At first, I told them I was sorry, and I told them I would correct it in extra time. I’m happy I did it,” he added.
The forward praised the unity within the squad, noting that his final two goals were the product of teamwork.
“Kudos to the guys who gave me the assist to score those two goals. I’m happy about the mentality of the team — all of us,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation to Nigerian supporters around the world, saying their belief in the team continues to inspire the players.
“Thank you to the Super Eagles fans all over the world who have scored with us and gone through it all with us. This win is for them too.”
Looking ahead to the next stage of the playoffs, Osimhen acknowledged the difficulty of the challenge but vowed that the Super Eagles would fight to the end.
“The next round won’t be easy. We will give everything to make sure we get to the final,” he said.
Osimhen’s brace, along with goals from Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke, sealed Nigeria’s extra-time win over Gabon on Thursday at the Stade Mohammed V in Rabat, Morocco, after the Panthers forced the match beyond 90 minutes with a late equaliser.
