The Rivers State House of Assembly has formally initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh.
The move was announced during plenary on Thursday, as shown in a live broadcast of the session presided over by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule. During the sitting, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, read the notice outlining allegations of gross misconduct against the governor.
According to the Assembly, 26 lawmakers endorsed the notice, which accused the governor of actions said to be in violation of the Nigerian Constitution. Speaker Amaewhule stated that the notice of allegations would be served on Governor Fubara within seven days, in line with legislative procedures.
In a similar development, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, presented the notice of allegations and claims of gross misconduct against the deputy governor, Ngozi Oduh, during the same plenary.
The commencement of the impeachment process marks a significant escalation in political tensions within the state, with further legislative actions expected in the coming days.
