Sheffield United Eye Onyeka As Wilder Signals Midfield Reinforcement Plans

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has indicated that the club is actively searching for midfield additions, with Brentford and Nigeria international Frank Onyeka emerging as a possible target.

Onyeka’s reduced involvement at Brentford this season, coupled with his recent return from Africa Cup of Nations duty, has reportedly made the 28-year-old midfielder available, drawing attention from several Championship sides and clubs across Europe.

According to reports, Sheffield United are among the teams that have made formal enquiries about Onyeka, with both loan and permanent transfer options under consideration as the Blades look to strengthen their squad ahead of the second half of the campaign.

When asked about the speculation surrounding Onyeka, Wilder avoided confirming specific targets but acknowledged that recruitment efforts in midfield were ongoing.

“We’re after somebody in the middle of the park, so there’s a list of players that are there, and some are on the spot and some are miles off,” Wilder said. “We work incredibly hard to try and get them over the line and we’re still pushing to improve.”

Onyeka has featured sparingly for Brentford this term but offers Premier League experience and international pedigree, qualities that make him an appealing option for Championship clubs seeking energy, defensive cover and intensity in midfield.

Sheffield United are understood to be among several interested clubs, alongside Valencia, Coventry City and Birmingham City, with Brentford open to either a loan move that includes an option to buy or a straight permanent transfer.

Brentford’s recent decision to extend the contract of midfielder Vitaly Janelt has suggested that any exits from the squad may involve players no longer central to the club’s plans.

Keith Andrews, who previously worked with Wilder at Sheffield United before moving to Brentford, has spoken about Onyeka’s desire for more consistent playing time.

“I know Frank is keen to play football more regularly than he has and I completely understand that,” Andrews said.

With interest growing from both England and abroad, Onyeka’s next move could prove significant for his career, while also shaping Sheffield United’s push for their objectives in the remainder of the season.
