Two Feared Dead As Truck Crashes Into Gombe Market Shops

A policewoman and another individual have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident at the New Mile 3 Market along the outskirts of the Gombe metropolis.

The incident occurred on Wednesday along the Gombe-Yola Federal Highway when a truck conveying bags of grains reportedly lost control and rammed into roadside shops, leaving two people dead and two others injured, including the driver.

Eyewitnesses said the truck driver, who was travelling from the Taraba axis, allegedly suffered brake failure before crashing into nearby shops, damaging property and hitting traders and passersby in the area.

The Gombe State Police Command confirmed the accident, stating that the crash involved a DAF truck bearing registration number XH 122 GME, three motorcycles, pedestrians and several shops.

Police Public Relations Officer, Buhari Abdullahi, said preliminary findings revealed that the driver was attempting to access a filling station through a one-way route when the vehicle reportedly developed brake failure.

According to him, the driver subsequently lost control and crashed into motorcycles, pedestrians and nearby shops.

The police identified one of the deceased as Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina, attached to the Communications Department of the Gombe State Command, while the second victim was described as an unidentified male pedestrian.

Abdullahi added that two injured victims, including the truck driver, are currently receiving medical treatment. He also noted that the accident caused significant damage to motorcycles and roadside shops.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Umar Ahmed Chuso, cautioned motorists against traffic violations and urged drivers to ensure proper vehicle maintenance and compliance with road safety regulations.

Meanwhile, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya expressed sadness over the accident, describing it as painful and unfortunate due to the loss of lives and destruction of property.

The governor extended condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the repose of their souls. He also sympathised with those injured and wished them quick recovery.

Yahaya commended security agencies and emergency responders for their swift intervention at the scene and called on motorists, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to strictly observe traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
