Werder Bremen Rule Out Boniface Return This Season

Werder Bremen have announced that Nigerian forward Victor Boniface will not play again for the club this season, despite recently resuming light training after a prolonged spell out with a knee injury.

The 25-year-old striker, who moved to Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, sustained the injury during a training session in December. He subsequently underwent surgery in January in Innsbruck, Austria, under the supervision of knee specialist Prof. Dr Christian Fink.

Providing an update on the player’s condition, Bremen sporting director Peter Niemeyer said the club does not expect Boniface to recover in time to feature again before the end of the campaign.

“He is finishing his rehabilitation in Leverkusen, and we are pleased with every bit of progress. But it is still impossible to predict when he will be fully fit again,” Niemeyer told German outlet DeichStube.
“Due to the rehabilitation process, we do not expect Victor to play for Werder again this season.”

Although the club has effectively ruled him out for the remainder of the term, Boniface offered fans a glimpse of his recovery earlier this week. In a video shared on X, the forward was seen performing leg exercises, captioning the clip in pidgin English to indicate he had returned to training. Supporters flooded the post with encouraging messages.

Boniface featured in 11 Bundesliga matches for Bremen this season, providing two assists but failing to score. Those appearances will now mark his final contribution for the club in the current campaign.

The injury setback added to what has been a challenging period for the striker. He previously missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to fitness issues and was also unavailable for Bremen’s January 2026 clash against Borussia Dortmund after experiencing complications during his rehabilitation.

In earlier social media reflections, Boniface admitted the recovery process had taken a psychological toll, revealing he had been “putting on a fake smile for over a year,” while expressing faith amid the difficulties.
