Super Falcons striker Esther Okoronkwo produced a dazzling performance on Monday night, netting a first-half hat-trick to power AFC Toronto into the inaugural Northern Super League (NSL) championship final.
Her blistering display inspired Toronto to a 4-1 victory over the Montreal Roses in a snow-laden semifinal clash at York Lions Stadium, securing a 6-1 aggregate triumph for the regular-season champions.
Okoronkwo, 28, wasted no time asserting her dominance, scoring in the 7th, 20th, and 26th minutes to put her team firmly in control. Her clinical finishing capped off an already impressive season in which she registered eight goals and eight assists in 1,486 minutes of league action.
Lauren Rowe added a fourth for Toronto in the 83rd minute, while Montreal’s Tanya Boychuk pulled one back in the 74th minute.
The Nigerian forward’s explosive form drew widespread praise from fans and pundits, who flooded social media with tributes, calling her “Africa’s next big star” and recalling her standout performances for Nigeria at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where she scored three times en route to the semifinals.
Okoronkwo, who was named Nigeria’s Baller of the Week in September after a stellar outing in Toronto’s 7-0 demolition of Vancouver Rise, once again demonstrated her knack for stepping up on big occasions.
“It was a complete team effort,” Toronto coach Marko Milanović said after the match. “The work up front from Kaylee Hunter, alongside Esther, was incredible. As for Esther, we know what she’s capable of — she’s a big-time player who delivers when it matters most. We saw it at the Africa Cup of Nations, and now again in this semifinal.”
Toronto had taken a 2-0 advantage from the first leg on November 1 at Stade Boreale in Montreal, thanks to goals from Small and Hunter.
With Monday’s emphatic win, Toronto now turns its focus to the NSL final, where they will face Vancouver Rise at BMO Field on Saturday. Vancouver advanced after edging Ottawa 5-4 on penalties following a 3-3 aggregate draw.
The second leg of the Toronto–Montreal tie had originally been slated for Sunday but was postponed to Monday due to heavy snowfall across the Toronto area.
