US President Donald Trump on Friday signalled that his administration has given Ukraine until November 27 to accept a contentious 28-point proposal aimed at bringing an end to its war with Russia.
Speaking in an interview with Fox Radio, Trump said the date was “an appropriate time” for Kyiv to respond, though he noted that deadlines could shift if progress warranted an extension.
According to a draft of the plan obtained by AFP, Ukraine would be required to relinquish a section of its eastern territory to Russia and significantly reduce the size of its military. Kyiv would also commit to permanently abandoning its bid to join NATO. While Western peacekeepers would not be deployed inside Ukraine under the proposal, European fighter jets would be stationed in Poland to provide security support.
Trump argued that the plan reflected the realities on the battlefield, suggesting that continued fighting would still leave Ukraine at risk of losing the territories in question.
“Say what you want, they were very brave,” he said of Ukrainian forces. He added that Russian President Vladimir Putin “is not looking for more war” and claimed the prolonged conflict had brought Moscow “punishment” despite what he described as Russia’s expectation of a quick, one-day operation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday rejected the proposal, insisting he would not “betray” Ukraine by accepting terms viewed in Kyiv as heavily favourable to Moscow.
The White House has maintained that it has been consulting with both Ukraine and Russia as it refines the plan.
