Otti Meets Detained IPOB Leader Kanu, Expresses Optimism on Imminent Release

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Sunday paid a visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, reaffirming that efforts to secure his freedom were being intensified.

The governor was joined by Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu; the Abia State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN); and his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.

In a statement after the visit, Ekeoma said Otti encouraged Kanu to remain resolute, noting that consultations and engagements he began more than two years ago had gained renewed momentum. He added that the governor expressed confidence that the matter would be resolved through administrative channels, raising hopes of Kanu’s imminent release.

Otti was also said to have informed Kanu that the Sultan of Sokoto had shown support for a peaceful resolution. In a lighter moment, the governor joked that the Sultan referred to Kanu as his “subject” who could even be turbaned—an exchange that reportedly drew laughter from the detained IPOB leader.

Kanu, described as being in good spirits, expressed gratitude for the governor’s visit. He commended Otti for the progress recorded in Abia State and encouraged him to sustain his focus on good governance for the benefit of the people.

He ended the meeting with prayers for the governor and his entourage.
