ECOWAS Endorses John Mahama as West Africa’s Sole Candidate for 2027 AU Chairmanship

Ghana’s former President, John Dramani Mahama, has secured a major diplomatic endorsement as the Economic Community of West African States (Council of Ministers) approved him as the region’s single candidate for the African Union chairmanship in 2027.

The endorsement was announced on Friday during the 95th ordinary session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, held in Abuja.

In its resolution, the council described the decision as a recognition of Ghana’s prominent role within the regional bloc and its contribution to ECOWAS’ international visibility. The ministers noted that putting forward one candidate would enhance the likelihood of the region securing leadership positions in continental and global institutions.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Ablakwa, confirmed the endorsement via a post on X, stating that the decision was unanimous. He added that the Authority of Heads of State and Government is expected to ratify the declaration on Sunday. Ablakwa expressed appreciation on behalf of Ghana, saying the nation was grateful for the confidence reposed in Mahama.

The African Union chairmanship rotates across regions, with Southern Africa currently holding the position following the election of Angolan President João Gonçalves Lourenço earlier this year. West Africa is scheduled to take its turn in 2027.

The position was previously occupied by Mauritania’s President, Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, who assumed the role at the 37th AU Assembly.

All AU member nations will vote in 2027, with a two-thirds majority required to elect a chairperson. ECOWAS’ early endorsement is seen as a strategic step to solidify regional backing and strengthen Mahama’s standing ahead of the continental vote.
