Mbappe returns as Alonso seeks Madrid revival against Alaves

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Kylian Mbappe is available for selection ahead of Sunday’s La Liga encounter with Alaves, offering a boost to a squad grappling with injuries, suspensions and a dip in form.

Mbappe was absent from Wednesday’s Champions League loss to Manchester City, a result that deepened Madrid’s struggles, with the Spanish giants recording just two victories in their last eight matches. The poor run has increased pressure on Alonso as questions grow over his future at the club.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, the Madrid coach said the French forward is fully fit and in contention to feature. He noted that a final decision on whether Mbappe would start the match would be taken closer to kick-off.

Real Madrid travel to Vitoria severely stretched, with key players including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dani Carvajal and Eduardo Camavinga sidelined by injury. Fran Garcia, Alvaro Carreras and Endrick are also unavailable due to suspension, while defender Dean Huijsen is expected to return to the squad for a fixture that could prove pivotal for Alonso.

Despite the absences, the coach expressed confidence in the depth of his squad, insisting the available players are capable of delivering a strong performance.

Alonso also reflected on Madrid’s current position in the title race, with the team trailing leaders Barcelona by four points. He suggested that the present difficulties could ultimately strengthen the side if they manage to reverse their fortunes.

According to him, navigating through challenging periods and restoring momentum could, in time, be seen as a defining phase that hardened the team and improved its resilience.
