United States Congressman Riley M. Moore has distanced Washington from any suggestion that it supports the fragmentation of Nigeria, cautioning that separatist movements could deepen insecurity and expose vulnerable communities to greater danger.
Moore made the remarks in a statement shared on his verified X account after a visit to Nigeria, where he met with government representatives, church leaders, humanitarian organisations and internally displaced persons to assess the situation facing affected communities.
According to the lawmaker, discussions during his trip focused on violence and humanitarian concerns, not the division of the country. He said proposals encouraging separatism would ultimately worsen conditions, particularly for Christian populations in the North and Middle Belt.
Moore argued that a weakened Nigerian state could have consequences beyond its borders, warning that instability would create opportunities for armed groups and further threaten civilian safety across the region.
He reaffirmed his intention to continue advocating for victims of terrorism and insecurity, stressing that his concern extends to all Nigerians affected by violence.
The congressman also pointed to the recently signed security cooperation agreement between the United States and Nigeria, describing it as a significant step toward improving joint efforts to address instability and strengthening ties between the two countries.
