Van Dijk’s Late Strike Seals Liverpool Win As Top-Five Race Intensifies

Virgil van Dijk scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to hand Liverpool a crucial 2-1 victory over Everton on Sunday, boosting their hopes of securing a UEFA Champions League place next season.

The decisive moment came deep into added time at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium, where the Dutch defender rose highest to head home a corner delivered by Dominik Szoboszlai, leaving goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with no chance.

The victory strengthens Liverpool’s grip on fifth place in the Premier League standings, opening a seven-point gap over sixth-placed Chelsea.

Earlier, Mohamed Salah had given Liverpool the lead in the first half, finishing calmly after being set up by Cody Gakpo. The goal also saw Salah draw level with Steven Gerrard as the joint top scorer in Merseyside derby history in the Premier League era.

Everton responded shortly after the break, with Beto converting from close range following a low delivery across goal. The match appeared destined for a draw until Van Dijk’s late intervention settled the contest.

Speaking after the game, the Liverpool captain acknowledged the importance of the result in the race for European qualification, noting that every remaining fixture carries significant weight.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa edged a thrilling 4-3 victory over Sunderland in a dramatic encounter. Ollie Watkins scored twice for Villa, while Tammy Abraham netted a late winner after the visitors had briefly fought back to level the score.

Villa’s win moves them level on points with third-placed Manchester United, further tightening the battle for Champions League qualification.

At the lower end of the table, Morgan Gibbs-White delivered a standout performance, scoring a hat-trick as Nottingham Forest came from behind to defeat Burnley 4-1. The result eases relegation fears for Forest while piling pressure on Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham, who drew 2-2 with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, remain just above the relegation zone, trailing West Ham United.

Attention now turns to a key title clash, as Manchester City host league leaders Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. A win for City, combined with a favourable midweek result, could see Pep Guardiola’s side move to the top of the table.
