The Coalition of Federal Pensioners of Nigeria has announced plans for a nationwide protest on December 8 to demand the payment of outstanding pension increment arrears and palliative allowances owed to its members.
In a statement issued on Friday in Lagos, the coalition’s National Chairman, Mukaila Ogunbote—who also leads the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NIPOST Chapter—said the protest would proceed unless the Federal Government releases the arrears of a ₦32,000 pension increase and a ₦25,000 palliative approved in 2023.
Ogunbote accused the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General of failing to take pensioners’ concerns seriously, urging members across the country to mobilise for what he described as a fight against injustice.
According to the coalition, demonstrations will take place in Abuja, Lagos and states nationwide. Protesters plan to gather at Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate offices and in front of Nigeria Television Authority stations.
He urged all affiliated organisations to rally their members, stressing the urgency of the action.
“The protest will continue until we receive alerts for the ₦32,000 pension increment and the ₦25,000 palliative for six months,” he said, adding that participants unable to travel back should come prepared to remain at the venues.
