Igbo community visits Sokoto inmates during Christmas outreach

The Igbo community in Sokoto State marked the Christmas season with an outreach to inmates at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, where Indigenous People of Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is currently being held.

In a statement signed by Nze A. C. Madu and released to journalists on Thursday, the community leadership said the visit was part of its annual Christmas activities and aimed at demonstrating compassion and communal solidarity.

The statement explained that the initiative was influenced by Kanu’s situation at the facility and a desire to extend goodwill beyond individual considerations.

According to the community, members spent Christmas Day at the correctional centre, sharing meals and fellowship with inmates as part of the outreach programme.

It noted that, rather than focusing on one person, the group decided to provide meals for all inmates at the facility.

The statement said the gesture ensured that the entire inmate population, estimated at about 1,300, participated in the Christmas celebration.

The community leadership described the action as consistent with Igbo cultural values that emphasise collective responsibility, as well as broader principles of charity and fellowship.

It added that the outreach was carried out as a humanitarian effort without regard to background or circumstance, offering inmates a sense of inclusion and comfort during the festive period.

The Sokoto Igbo community expressed hope that the initiative would contribute to peace, unity and goodwill beyond the Christmas season.

Noblequestdaily reports that Kanu was transferred to the Sokoto Correctional Centre following his conviction and sentencing by Justice James Omotosho in November 2025.

The court sentenced him to life imprisonment on counts one, two, four, five and six related to terrorism charges, while he received a 20-year jail term on count three and a five-year jail term on count seven, both without an option of fine.

Justice Omotosho delivered the judgment after finding Kanu guilty on all seven counts.
