Ten Defining Global Moments of 2025

The year 2025 produced a series of dramatic political shifts, diplomatic struggles and historic events that shaped global affairs. From power transitions to climate disasters, the following developments stood out.

Trump’s Return and a Turbulent US Political Climate
Donald Trump began his second term with sweeping policy changes, launching a protectionist agenda, intensifying deportations and dismantling parts of the federal establishment.

His administration deployed the National Guard to Democratic-leaning cities, challenged diversity initiatives and faced growing public frustration over the rising cost of living.

Diplomatic efforts yielded uneven results, and a string of defeats in local elections has put Republicans under pressure ahead of next year’s midterms.

Gaza Ceasefire Under US Pressure
A rare diplomatic breakthrough led to a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, ending two years of conflict in the Gaza Strip. Israel retrieved remaining hostages and bodies of victims in exchange for Palestinian detainees.
Despite increased aid access, humanitarian groups warn conditions in Gaza remain dire. Meanwhile, regional tensions persist, with Israeli strikes targeting Hamas, Hezbollah and, in June, Iran’s nuclear sites. A September operation in Qatar further heightened concerns.

Ukraine Peace Efforts Falter
Trump’s return injected new movement into Ukraine-Russia diplomacy, but progress quickly stalled. His shifting stance between Zelensky and Putin unsettled Kyiv, which fears being pressured into concessions.
A tense Oval Office exchange in February and an abruptly ended Alaska summit with Putin underscored the complexity of negotiations.

Despite fresh US sanctions on Russia, draft proposals circulated in November drew criticism for leaning toward Moscow’s interests. On the ground, Russian forces continued slow advances amid heavy casualties.

A Global Trade War Unfolds
Tariffs targeting steel, aluminium, copper and other industries triggered a wide-ranging trade confrontation. Retaliatory measures followed, prompting intense negotiations with China and the European Union.

Talks with Mexico remain ongoing, while discussions with Canada collapsed after an advert targeting US tariff policy.

With inflation worsening, Trump reversed some food-related tariffs in November to ease pressure on American consumers.

The Rise of Pope Leo XIV
The Catholic Church elected its first American pontiff, Robert Francis Prevost, who took the name Leo XIV. A former missionary in Peru, he succeeded Pope Francis after a swift conclave.
Leo XIV has largely continued Francis’ priorities around poverty, migration and environmental protection, while offering reassurance to conservatives by cooling expectations on women’s ordination and same-sex marriage recognition.

Gen Z Movements Sweep Across Continents
A wave of youth-driven protests emerged across Asia, Africa and Latin America, challenging corruption, economic hardship and censorship. Outcomes varied: Morocco pledged reforms while prosecuting thousands of demonstrators; in some countries, harsh crackdowns broadened the resistance.
The unrest forced political exits in Nepal and Madagascar, while in Tanzania, post-election protests were met with force. A pirate flag from the manga “One Piece” became a symbol of defiance shared widely on social media.

AI Investment Surges
Artificial intelligence attracted unprecedented investment, with global spending expected to surpass $1.5 trillion this year. Nvidia briefly soared past a $5 trillion valuation, fuelling concerns about an emerging tech bubble.
Criticism mounted over AI-related misinformation, copyright disputes and layoffs. OpenAI confronted a lawsuit involving a California teenager’s suicide, leading to new parental controls and the introduction of chatbot regulations in the state.

A Bold Heist at the Louvre
In October, burglars disguised as workers gained access to the Louvre Museum using a furniture ladder, escaping on scooters with crown jewels worth €88 million. One jewel-encrusted crown was dropped during their escape.
The theft drew global attention and renewed scrutiny of museum security. Authorities have charged three suspects, but the missing artifacts remain unrecovered.

US Strikes Heighten Tensions with Venezuela
Since August, the US has maintained a substantial naval presence near Latin America, conducting more than 20 deadly strikes on vessels allegedly involved in drug trafficking. Washington insists the actions are lawful, but critics, including a senior UN official, have condemned them.
Venezuela has reacted angrily, accusing the US of seeking to topple President Nicolás Maduro. The US continues to offer a $50 million reward for his capture.

A Year of Extreme Weather
Climate-related disasters intensified worldwide. Vietnam experienced deadly floods, while the Caribbean and the Philippines suffered repeated storms.

Hurricane Melissa devastated Jamaica and caused widespread flooding in Haiti and Cuba. The Philippines endured three severe typhoons in two months, and Vietnam faced deadly landslides.
Europe saw record wildfires, with France’s Mediterranean coast enduring its worst blaze in half a century. In the United States, lightning-sparked fires forced the closure of the Grand Canyon’s North Rim for the remainder of the tourist season.
